Design, modelling and simulation of a hybrid fuel cell propulsion system for a domestic ferry

It is proposed to install a hybrid fuel cell electric propulsion system on a domestic ferry. The fuel cell hybrid system is compared with the existing diesel propulsion system for this ferry using a developed time-domain threedegree of freedom ship simulator implemented in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. Performance comparison of the two systems is made in terms of first cost, fuel cost, system weight and volume. Simulation results for the ship are validated using real ship operational data for the existing diesel propulsion system. The developed ship simulator can be used for further studies of fuel cell hybrid propulsion systems and thus can help ship system designers in investigating different system lay-outs and different energy management strategies of hybrid fuel cell propulsion systems.
